In late September when I was laid up in a leg cast back in Nashville and couldn't participate, an old friend, fisherman extraordinaire and former Navy fighter pilot in
Viet Nam was arriving in Jackson Hole, Wyoming with a group of veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan who were about to experience a trip of a lifetime. Each man would spend a week fly fishing the Snake and Jackson Lake as a thank you from many people in the community who wanted to show their appreciation for these mens' service to their country by rolling out the red carpet.
Another good friend, outdoor writer and fellow guide writes about
his day on the river with the veterans for the Jackson Hole News. The group is pictured here on the last day of the trip. We're all looking forward to making this an annual event and I'm hoping to be there with them next year.
Thanks for remembering!
ReplyDeleteA thoughtful tribute which brought tears to my eyes. May God bless all who served and are serving and may God bless America, land that I love!
ReplyDeleteInspiring Blog post on SNake River Fly Fishing event for vets - loved the commentary and the Blog and the photos. Did you know that Bill and I did something similar in September in JH for four wounded vets from Iraq - had them or a week of golf, fishing on the South Fork, Yellowstone oversee, and a few other activities. As word got around that we were bringing them, there were too many offers of help to accommodate. EVERYONE wanted to show appreciation - these were Iraq warriors that had been severely wounded in the field - selected for us by Walter Reed hospital - through channels of course.
ReplyDeleteLFW, no I didn't know you two did that. But what a wonderful and kind idea! Thanks so much for sharing this with me and readers.
ReplyDeleteI had never seen this video by Johnny Cash. He was pure genius. Thank you!
